– Foreign Ministry says ‘reckless’ extremist Israeli government’ policies pose serious threat to int’l security

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has “strongly” condemned the storming of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif by Israeli extremists and their provocative actions they carried out under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces.

The ministry described the incidents in a statement on Thursday as a “blatant violation of international law, and a flagrant breach of the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its holy sites.”

The Ministry spokesperson, Fouad Majali, reaffirmed Jordan’s firm rejection of the attacks and desecration of Al Aqsa Mosque, warning of the risks posed by their continuation and of Israeli attempts, as the occupying power, to impose new facts aimed at dividing the holy site both temporally and spatially.

Majali added that the “reckless” policies and actions of the extremist Israeli government in Jerusalem and its holy sites could escalate the conflict globally.

He called on the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by compelling Israel to halt its ongoing violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, stop its dangerous escalation in the West Bank, end its aggression on the Gaza Strip, and provide the necessary protection for the Palestinian people while safeguarding their right to establish an independent state on their national soil.

He emphasised that Al Aqsa Mosque, with its total area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, reiterating that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the sole authority responsible of supervising the holy site’s affairs according to international law and the legal and historical status quo.
