Liverpool edge Arsenal as Brighton stun Man City

The Premier League’s third round on Saturday saw contrasting outcomes for two title contenders, with Brighton stunning Manchester City 2-1 at the Amex, while Liverpool continued their flawless start by edging Arsenal at Anfield.

At the American Express Stadium, Brighton pulled off a thrilling 2-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Despite City’s strong start and dominant possession with 64 per cent, they failed to make their pressure count. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 34th minute, finishing off a clever assist from Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush.

Brighton, urged on by their home fans, looked recharged after the break as coach Fabian Hurzeler made five substitutions. Veteran James Milner, introduced from the bench, levelled the score from the penalty spot in the 67th minute. The match seemed destined for a draw until Brajan Gruda produced a moment of magic in the 89th minute, dribbling through City’s defence before slotting past the keeper to secure all three points.

Brighton managed seven shots compared to City’s three despite having less possession. With this result, City remain on three points after three rounds, while Brighton move up to four.

Later at Anfield, Liverpool claimed the top clash of the round with a 1-0 win over Arsenal. In a cagey encounter with few clear chances, Arne Slot’s side broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when Dominik Szoboszlai fired home a spectacular free kick from distance.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Liverpool’s defence held firm to seal their third straight win. The champions now sit top of the table with nine points, while Arsenal remain on six.

In the next round, Manchester City face rivals Manchester United, Liverpool take on Burnley, and Arsenal meet Nottingham Forest.
