Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed on Sunday with regional and international counterparts the dangerous escalation unfolding in the region.
The discussions focused on the repercussions of the recent developments, particularly following a reported US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier in the day, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
Safadi discussed efforts aimed at ending the escalation and returning to negotiations, which he emphasised as the only viable path to protect the region from sliding further into conflict and war.
He stressed the need to launch effective regional and international action to prevent further deterioration, especially following today’s US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. He called for halting the wars and adopting impactful political approaches to reach a political agreement on the Iranian nuclear file, and to address all causes of conflict in accordance with international law, international legitimacy, respect for state sovereignty, and legitimate rights.
In separate phone calls, Safadi spoke with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
During the conversations, Safadi reiterated Jordan’s firm rejection of any violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, or the sovereignty of states.
He also called for an immediate end to the war on Iran and the resumption of diplomatic talks. Additionally, he urged the international community to prioritise halting the aggression on Gaza, lifting the inhumane blockade, and ending illegal Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank that threaten the viability of the two-state solution and prospects for a just and lasting peace.
Safadi and his counterparts agreed that there is no military solution to the region’s crises and underscored the importance of restraint and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and safeguard regional and international peace and security, according to the statement.
Foreign ministers from countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday urged Israel to end its “aggression” towards Iran, without mentioning the US strikes on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites.
The ministers “condemn firmly the aggression of Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stress the urgent need to stop Israeli attacks and their great concern regarding this dangerous escalation”, said an OIC statement
It was published at the end of an OIC meeting in Istanbul this weekend.
