Senate president meets Egyptian, Azeri, US ambassadors over ties, regional developments

Senate President Faisal Fayez on Wednesday met separately with Egyptian Ambassador Khaled Abyad and Azerbaijani Ambassador Shahin Abdullayev over ways to boost bilateral cooperation between Jordan and both countries across various fields.

During the meetings, Fayez and the two diplomats went over current regional developments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to enhancing relations with Egypt and Azerbaijan, underscoring the importance of sustaining coordination and consultation on issues of mutual concern.

Fayez highlighted the need to bolster economic cooperation and activate bilateral agreements in different sectors.

Addressing regional affairs, the Senate president reiterated Jordan’s firm positions under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, which are centred on the necessity of achieving security and stability across the region.

Fayez also stressed the importance of the international community taking effective measures to oblige Israel to fully implement all provisions of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and to allow the entry of adequate humanitarian assistance into the Strip.

The two ambassadors praised Jordan’s significant role, led by His Majesty, in promoting peace, security and stability in the region, as well as the King’s continued efforts to enhance the humanitarian response to Gaza.

Also on Wednesday, Fayez met with US Ambassador to Jordan Jim Holtsnider over bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation across various fields, as well as regional developments and issues of mutual interest, Petra added.

Fayez highlighted the strategic relations between the Kingdom and the United States, emphasising the importance of continuing to expand cooperation in the political, economic and investment spheres, in line with the interests of the two countries.

In the presence of Chairperson of the Jordanian-American Parliamentary Friendship Committee Suhair Ali, Fayez commended the support provided by the US to Jordan, urging an increase in assistance to help the Kingdom address economic challenges resulting from regional conflicts and developments.

He noted that enhanced support would allow Jordan to sustain its key role in advancing regional peace and stability, while continuing to host Syrian refugees and others on its territory.

Fayez also stressed the need for Israel to fully implement all provisions of the Gaza ceasefire agreement proposed by US President Donald Trump, which was accepted by all concerned parties and has received broad international support.

He also urged mediators to apply pressure on Israel to proceed to the second phase of the agreement and to allow humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip.

The Senate president reiterated Jordan’s stance on regional issues, highlighting that King Abdullah has consistently affirmed that a two-state solution, in line with international legitimacy resolutions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is the path to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

Fayez emphasised that Jordan rejects any solution to the Palestinian issue that compromises its national principles, and affirms the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, as well as the city’s established legal and historical status.

In a separate meeting, the Jordanian-US Parliamentary Friendship Committee discussed issues of mutual interest with the US Ambassador, exchanged views on developments in the region, and explored ways to further strengthen Jordan-US relations across various fields.

She also welcomed the seven-year (2023–2029) memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the strategic partnership between both countries, under which annual support amounts to $1.45 billion, alongside an additional $200 million in yearly aid, noting its vital role in supporting the economic modernisation programme and funding key sectors such as water, information technology, and major infrastructure projects in the Kingdom.
